Hope Academy Testimonies
As parents of an adult special needs son, it can become very disheartening sometimes when trying to meet our son’s needs. We have hopes and dreams for him just as any parent would. When we first moved back to NC from VA we were not prepared for how little the State of NC offers in way of daily activities for Preston so that we might be able to work. The only thing offered at all was one day a week at the workshop, and even then we didn't feel as though they actually wanted him there due to his Epilepsy and the seizures that occur almost on a daily basis. We were beginning to feel as though we had made a mistake by even moving back home, when someone at our church (Mud Creek) mentioned that there was a new program called Hope Academy which would be a day program for people of special needs. So I made contact with Betty Edwards and immediately knew that this was where I wanted Preston to be. We came to an information meeting that August and I cried after I left because for the first time in Preston’s life, I was made to feel that my son would be welcomed and not just tolerated. Betty, Peggy, Cheryl and Tina ( and all of the others who so generously give their time) not only provide a safe place for all of those who attend Hope, they show them that they have a place in this world and that God loves them just like everyone else. I can now work every day without worry, due to the excellent care that he is given. And without a doubt, he is the happiest I have ever seen him. Not only is the staff of Hope Academy to be commended, but also the entire staff of Mud Creek. From Christmas gifts to an amazing prom every spring, the church staff of Mud Creek Baptist go out of their way to always make every event special. Preston is so proud when we are at church on Sunday and so many people from the church speak to him by name.
Finally, I would like to say how much I appreciate Pastor Mathis for believing in Betty Edwards’ vision of a place of where people with special needs are loved and respected for who they are. I think I can speak for so many parents and say thank you and God Bless you all! Mud Creek Baptist Church is not only a church that says they care, they are truly a church that shows they care.

Hope Academy is a blessing to our family. Kenny has just bloomed; he is talking more, and he has come so far. In the last two years, and when I was so sick, Hope Academy prayed every day with Kenny for me. We are so grateful for all they have done and continue to do. I pray that God will bless them for all they do each day for our son.
